WHEN SIMON CAME (Simon Fraser –Fraser Lake 1806)
by
Doris Ray

When Simon came
this lake was dark and
wide
Cobalt blue
that matched the autumn
sky
An eagle swooped
and trout were on the
rise
When Simon came

When Simon came
to Nad'leh village in the
bay
The Native elders
told him he could
stay
They gave him food
and lodging on that
day
When Simon came

When Simon came
he built a trade goods
store
With axes, knives
and clothing white men
wore
The Natives trapped
the beaver 'long the
shore
When Simon came

When Simon left
a woman softly
cried
And he remembered
'til the day he
died
A cobalt colored lake
and soft brown
eyes
When Simon left
