A famous pistol of the mid -1800's was the derringer designed by Henry Deringer. In 1825, Deringer had converted his flintlock dueling pistol to percussion ignition. He was one of the first to make percussion handguns. He cut down his pistol to everyman's size, hoping to compete with Colt and others for the expending popular market. The result was the .44 caliber "Philadelphia" Deringer, as fine a thing as any little man ever carried to cut a big man down. The original of this model became famous, or infamous, by being the weapon used by John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Deringers were often ordered in pairs like dueling pistols and were used for dueling. Gradually the name "derringer" became synonymous of pocket pistols of heavy caliber. Colt later made a widely popular derringer. So did Remington and Smith &Wesson. The derringer is accepted as being the weapon with which Frankie shot Johnny in the famous popular ballad. Winchester saw that his 1866 rifle had two outstanding assets: its capacity to fire rapidly and its ease of handling, but its bullet lacked impact and range. He took steps to correct it. The result was a famous weapon that has been called “The Gun That Won The West”, the 1873 Winchester. This model was stronger, simpler, and lighter in weight then the 1866 model. But, the greatest improvement was its powerful and dependable centre-fire cartridge. In 1878, Colt’s revolvers were re-chambered for the .44 Winchester rifle cartridges. From then on, a man needed to carry only one kind of ammunition for his pistol and rifle. Among its many satisfied owners were some of history’s most famous Western figures, from outlaws like Billy the Kid to lawmen like the legendary Wyatt Earp. The year it was introduced, Buffalo Bill Cody called it “the boss...the most complete rifle now made.”
